Canoe Concepts opened in August 1988,
so we are almost 21 years old! It was started by Colin Simpkins, who had recently graduated from Natal University, and Shaun Rice, who was working in Johannesburg at the time, having also graduated from Natal University, a few years before. Both were competitive paddlers during that period. They shared a vision that, in order for the sport to grow, canoeing needed it’s own, specialist retail outlet. Before that time, canoes and accessories had been purchased directly from factories, or from stores that specialized in other aspects, and sold canoes as an aside. Skeptics claimed that the sport was not big enough to support a specialist shop. The shop initially opened in Gleneagles Road Greenside, where it was located for 10 years. Increased rental, the inability to do repairs on the premises, and worsening parking problems, prompted a move to the current location in 5th Street, Albertskroon. During this period, Shaun immigrated to New Zealand, and Colin became the sole owner of the business. Canoe Concepts is the only retail outlet that can supply customers with kayaks from every manufacturer in the country, at factory prices. We also stock a wide range of recreational craft including fishing ski’s, plastic kayaks, Canadian canoes, wave ski’s, surf ski’s, as well heart rate monitors, G.P.S systems and Energy drinks.
